Executives at Universal and other labels believe a subscription service could prove more lucrative for them than iTunes' prevailing model of charging USD0.99 per track because it would increase consumption of music.

The Wall Street Journal says that ' net profit fell 15 percent in the January-to- March quarter, as its semiconductor operation suffered from slower sales growth worldwide of major digital products like PCs and mobile phones. In the first quarter of 2007, its operating margin plunged to 12 percent, the lowest level since the technology recession of 2000 and 2001. One major reason for this was a nearly 50 percent drop in prices for flash-memory chips, which are used for portable data storage and in digital cameras, music players and other gadgets.
