With its low power consumption and small size, mobile DRAM is used as main memory for mobile phones, portable game consoles, digital cameras and personal digital assistants (PDA). The 90 nanometer processing technology is about 40 percent more efficient than the 100-110 nanometer processing currently most widely used in the industry. The 512 MB DRAM Samsung produces can process 1.3 GB per second, the fastest of its kind.

With increasing demand for 3D graphics on mobile phones and 5 megapixel or higher resolution camera phones, memory chips of 512 Mb or above became essential to process at least 1GB of data per second. Samsung also plans to provide 1 GB memory capacity for portable devices by stacking two of its 512 MB chips together in a dual-die package.
